Temple Sells Human Hair for USD 28 Million

Hyderabad: This is a hair-raising achievement by one of the richest temples in India, the Tirumala temple. The temple administration managed to gather a whopping Rs 133 crore (USD 28 Million) by auctioning off human hair offered by the devotees to the deity. The temple in Andhra Pradesh is known for the unique offering made by the throngs of pilgrims who visit the holy place each year.

The e-auction of the hair was conducted for the first time by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and garnered lush returns. The TTD managed to auction as much as 65,000 kg of various categories of hair. It has been reported that close to 49 traders took part in the auction. Prisoners attack jail staff with Cricket bats

Hyderabad: It was a routine check at the Cherlapally Open Air Jail on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The jail staff were checking to see if any prisoner had a mobile phone on Monday, when they were attacked by some undertrial prisoners.

The jailors reportedly suspected that some phones had been smuggled into the jail. The headmistress of a government primary school in an Andhra Pradesh village has been suspended after allegations that she used burning firewood to punish 13 kids, all of them between Classes I and IV, for speaking in Telugu in class.

Unique Ritual to Propitiate Rain God

As the threat of drought looms large over Andhra Pradesh state of India, a unique three-day 'Maha Varuna Yagam' under the auspices of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) began here to propitiate the rain god.

The state government and TTD authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the event by erecting 108 'homagundams' or small platforms formed with bricks for holy fire.

Chain-snatcher jumps into jail!

In Hyderabad city, the state capital of Andhra Pradesh state of India, a chain-snatcher's ingenious ways to get out of police custody ended in a comic show with the men in uniform laughing all the way.

The thief, who was kept in the rural police station premises, pleaded with the police to let him off. As his pleas fell on deaf ears, he thought of other ways to get out of the police station. Then the thief climbed atop a huge tree inside the police station compound.
