1326 Indians die due to accidents, suicide every day !

NEW DELHI: Every fifth person who killed himself in Maharashtra in 2009 was a farmer, recent suicide data says, nailing the state for most farm suicides for the tenth year in a row. Nationwide, 17,368 farmers killed themselves in 2009, 7% more than the count in 2008.

The data is part of National Crime Records Bureau`s annual report of deaths and suicides across the country. Overall, India reported 418 accidental deaths a day in 2009. Road accidents killed 348 people a day; as many killed themselves daily for reasons ranging from illness to failure in love. The suicide count rose 1.7% compared to 2008 while accidental deaths, including those in road mishaps, increased by 7.3% over the last year. Man died after drinking Cola

Man who was 26 years old died & two of his friends & a shopkeeper fell ill, after drinking a soft drink in Seelampur area of north-east Delhi. The police suspect that the drink, which was being sold under the name of a multinational company was adulterated. Police have sent the samples for a lab. test.

The incident happened around 7.45 pm on Friday & all four victims were residents of Chauhan Bangar. They were rushed to LNJP hospital where Kamaruddin 26 years old was declared dead around 9.30 pm. The other victime cousins Sabbab Ahmed 30 years old & Mohammad Arshad 25 years old & shopkeeper Jamil Ahmed 40 years old were reported to be out of danger. All of them had taken a sip out of the bottle from which Kamaruddin was drinking, after he complained that the drink had a weird taste.

Man dies after torching himself for school building

A man who a week ago staked his life for a school building has passed away at a government hospital here.

Shiv Prasad Ahirwar, who was president of the Parent Teacher Association, succumbed to his burns a week after he torched himself in the janta durbar (public meeting) of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliament member Virendra Khateek Jan 7.

Python dies after having swallowed goat

At Vellore in Tamil Nadu state of India a 12-feet-long python has died after having swallowed a 15-kg weighing goat at Rangampettai village in Pernamput, 70 kms from here.

According to forest officials, the python which had strayed out of the nearby forest in search of food on Friday, swallowed a goat which was grazing along the forest fringes.

The python, unable to digest its huge catch, was seen lying still for almost 24 hours with a bloated stomach.

The forest officials who reached the village on Saturday after coming to know about it, saw a dead python. Officials said they could even feel the legs and horns of the goat inside the snake's stomach.

The python was later buried by the forest personnel.

Boy dies after being punished for reaching school late

Here is a 16-year-old student from Ahmedabad in Gujarat state of India who was told to run five times around his school ground for being late. Student collapsed after completing three rounds and died this morning before he could be taken to hospital.

Milan Tanna, usually punctual, had reached Narayan Guru School 15 minutes late and was ordered to do the rounds as part of what principal Taruna Ben claimed was “routine” punishment to “maintain discipline”.

Elephants die after Beer binge

Six elephants, including three calves, died after raiding an Indian village's rice beer and rampaging through a paddy field where they were electrocuted, as per the officials and residents.

Enticed by the aroma of rice beer being brewed by local tribal people, a herd of about 40 wild elephants came sniffing around the village of Chandan Nukat, about 250km west of Shillong, the capital of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

Lying for 6 years inside his own grave

Thousands of people are flocking to a remote village in Jharkhand state in India to catch a glimpse of an old man who has spent six years lying inside his own grave waiting to die as he mourns for his wife, officials said.

Basanta Roy claims he is 103 and spends his day clearing weeds from the grave and lying in it. Belonging to a Hindu caste who bury their dead, Roy dug his grave close to his wife's after she died in the late 1990s.

"He cleans his grave every day and waits for his death, which seems to be eluding him," said Shyam Narayan Ram, a senior government official from eastern state in India.
