Hyderabad: It was a routine check at the Cherlapally Open Air Jail on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The jail staff were checking to see if any prisoner had a mobile phone on Monday, when they were attacked by some undertrial prisoners.

The jailors reportedly suspected that some phones had been smuggled into the jail. When they were conducting searches in the Papagni block of the jail, where those under trial in terror-related cases are lodged, the prisoners attacked them with cricket bats.Read more at: Prisoners attack jail staff with cricket bats in Hyderabad

As many as 16 members of Brij Bihari’s family, including himself, had been named in the killings. The sensational killings, which were attributed to old enmity, had evoked an outcry then. Read More................World's oldest prisoner at 108

CHENNAI: At Puzhal prison in Tamil Nadu state of India, officials are using “well-behaved inmates” as decoys to keep tabs on other prisoners. The bait: extra chicken dishes.

Based on the information provided by these inmates, prison officials have been secretly monitoring the movements of several suspects. “We have placed at least 20 inmates — Prakash, an accused in the Kurangu Kumar murder case, notorious gangster Nagendran and Somu, an accused in the murder of MLA MK Balan — under shadow-watch. We suspect they have been using mobiles and smuggling contraband with the help of some prison officials,” as per R Duraisamy, deputy inspector general of police, prisons. In Kolkata city in West Bengal state of India, Raju Gaji, 19, was lodged into a jail earlier this month, but he went missing from the jail for almost 24 hours & later was found by prison guards snoring on the roof of the jail.

In fact he was bored with the prison routine and wanted to catch up on some sleep.

"We had sounded the alarm and were looking for him everywhere, but he could not be traced," B.D. Sharma, a senior police officer said.

Yesterday afternoon, prison guards heard loud snoring from one of the buildings.

"They climbed on top of the roof and found Gaji sleeping," Mr Sharma said.

A groggy Gaji seemed surprised when he found himself surrounded by guards pointing rifles at him, a senior jail official said.
