Mobile Crematorium

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Finding a piece of land for cremation has always been a problem in Kerala. Proposing a solution to this, the High Tech Seals Pvt Ltd, which also produces automotive parts, plans to introduce a mobile crematorium fuelled by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) here on the outskirts of Kochi.

"It was the controversies associated with cremation or burial and the issue of pollution that made us think about such a crematorium," said John Thomas, the managing director of the company.

The company proposes to mount the crematorium on a vehicle that can be moved to any location.

Although the company went ahead with the project two years ago, it was forced to go slow on the work.

"We started the work on the mobile crematorium alright, but had to slow down as there were some technical problems," said John.

The company, however, is successful with its non-mobile LPG crematoriums. These units have facilities to prevent pollution or odour from cremation.

So far the company has successfully installed 10 units in various municipalities in Kerala. Read more...................Kerala to have mobile crematorium

Rs.15.5 Lakhs for a VIP Mobile number

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
If India's economic liberalization is fruitful or not, here is an interesting story which shall make you believe that post economic liberalization Indians are indeed becoming rich. Take the case of this 26-year-old Amit Malhotra from Ludhiana city in Punjab state of India, son of a city garment manufacturer and property dealer, who spent a whopping Rs 15.50 lakhs (US$ 38,500) for the big-ticket mobile number 9780000000. It was just for a status symbol -- owning a VIP cell phone number like that!!!!

His father, Vijay Malhotra, was quoted as saying that this isn't something new for his son, and that he has always chosen VIP numbers as belongings. Just that this time round, he's blown up a huge amount of money on it...

All said, while a part of India that is seen as rich and fat might pride itself on this kind of obscenely ostentatious spending, what about the phone company -- in this case Hutch -- which actually conducted an auction of the VIP cell phone numbers?

Amit, who had previously applied for such a number; went through a phone auction that lasted from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening, and haggled alongside 4 other eager customers to eventually seal the big win.

Mobile Phone helps Indians learn English alphabets

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In India, 59.5% of total population is literate (definition: people of age 15 and over who can read and write). Male population is 70.2% literate while Female population is 48.3% literate (Data Source: cia.gov).
Now when more than 40% population is illiterate, government agencies are trying their best & are spending huge amounts to make people literate through various education programs. Now here is a surprising report that government might have achieved targets faster by simply sponsoring cellular mobile-phones among the illiterate masses.

Interestingly, many people living in Ranchi in Bihar State of India, have learned to identify English alphabets by using their mobile phones and are effectively putting their knowledge of English to use in different spheres of life. Claiming the trend is positive, a Ranchi Women's College sociologist said fast learning comes from the social laboratory. Read more.........Mobiles fuel literacy drive
