Woman forced to drink ‘phenyl’

In yet another incident of dowry harassment by in-laws, a 22-year-old woman was beaten up and allegedly forced to consume phenyl in Chander Nagar near Krishna Nagar in east Delhi on Friday evening, reports Times News Network.

The victim, Deepa Verma, is now recovering at the Hedgewar Hospital and is reportedly out of danger. The doctors at the hospital, however, refused to confirm the nature of the toxic substance used to poison her.

The incident comes to light a day after a 25-year-old man and his parents were arrested in Nangloi for allegedly killing his wife for dowry. The police, meanwhile, have registered a case of dowry harassment at the Krishna Nagar police station and an inquiry has been set up. Every four hours, one Indian woman ends life over dowry

As per data complied by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), on an average one Indian woman commits suicide every four hours over a dowry dispute, despite a series of laws to empower them.

As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 2,276 female suicides due to dowry disputes were reported in 2006 that is six a day on an average, while the figure was 2,305 in 2005. New Yorker beaten in India for Demanding Dowry

Patiala (Punjab): As per Indian TV Channels report, a New York-based non-resident Indian (NRI) doctor was arrested here on Friday for demanding a dowry of Rs 50 lakh, but not before he and his family were given a sound thrashing by the bride's side for putting forth such a demand just before the wedding was to commence here.

The doctor, Gurpreet Singh, and his parents were arrested by the Patiala police after the girl's family filed a police complaint.

Singh and his relatives originally hail from Ludhiana district. They have been settled in the US for many years. They were assaulted and beaten up by the bride's family and friends at the Chahal Marriage Palace - an upscale wedding venue - here.

The groom, Gurpreet Singh, received sound thrashing from several relatives and his turban and other finery for the occasion went flying. His father was not spared either.

Total chaos prevailed at the marriage venue where hundreds of guests from both sides had gathered for the wedding. The police were called and they took the groom and his relatives away.

"I thought they would lynch the boy," said a relative who witnessed the scene at the wedding venue.

The bride, a doctor herself, refused to marry Gurpreet after the dowry demand was made on Thursday night. But the bride's family did not call off the wedding ceremony in order to teach the groom and his family a lesson in full public view.
