The decision was made in the hot jungle night: Bhobesh Pahan and his two adult sons, Nirmal and Bimal, must die. Two weeks ago, the villagers of Poaltore, near the border with Bangladesh in India, had a meeting to decide what to do about the spate of illness gripping the village. A month before, a two-year-old, Sumon Pahan, no relation, had died of dysentery.

Several villagers had viral fever. The village witch doctor said the cause was simple. The 65-year-old Bhobesh Pahan and his sons were witches, and had placed a curse on the villagers. Read More................The dark side of India, where a witch-doctor's word means death

Patiala (Punjab): As per Indian TV Channels report, a New York-based non-resident Indian (NRI) doctor was arrested here on Friday for demanding a dowry of Rs 50 lakh, but not before he and his family were given a sound thrashing by the bride's side for putting forth such a demand just before the wedding was to commence here.

The doctor, Gurpreet Singh, and his parents were arrested by the Patiala police after the girl's family filed a police complaint.

Singh and his relatives originally hail from Ludhiana district. They have been settled in the US for many years. They were assaulted and beaten up by the bride's family and friends at the Chahal Marriage Palace - an upscale wedding venue - here.

The groom, Gurpreet Singh, received sound thrashing from several relatives and his turban and other finery for the occasion went flying. His father was not spared either.

Total chaos prevailed at the marriage venue where hundreds of guests from both sides had gathered for the wedding. The police were called and they took the groom and his relatives away.

"I thought they would lynch the boy," said a relative who witnessed the scene at the wedding venue.

The bride, a doctor herself, refused to marry Gurpreet after the dowry demand was made on Thursday night. But the bride's family did not call off the wedding ceremony in order to teach the groom and his family a lesson in full public view.

Doctors left locket in child's lungs

As per Indian TV channels report, doctors at the Delhi Government-run LNJP Hospital have allegedly left a locket inside a nine-month-old boy's chest after lung-surgery.

Uday was operated upon over the weekend and the locket, which he was wearing at the time of the surgery, was detected after a X-ray two days later.

Hospital Medical Superintendent and doctors were not available for comment. Surender Kumar Jha, the child's father, first admitted the child to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital on October 19 with complaints of cold, chest congestion and fever. ''He was referred to LNJP and was diagnosed with pleural effusion. The doctors said the boy needed an operation to drain out water and puss that had collected in his lungs,'' he said. ''After the surgery the child has been crying continuously.

After the X-ray I have been running after doctors to tell me what was happening but nobody helped,'' he added.

Mr Jha alleged that the hospital was trying to cover up the the incident and was trying to save its doctors.

The Indian Medical Association has sent a team to the hospital and are looking into the incident.

Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister Yoganand Shastri has ordered an inquiry. ''In case negligence is proved, strict action will be taken against the erring doctors,'' he warned.

Indian Quacks

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In India Quacks ( fake doctors ) can be seen in any city but here is one who has weird ways of treating his patients. He operates his patients with sword and needle.

In this case a patient suffering from appendicitis chooses to go to a 'surgeon' who is actually a baba / quack.

And believe it or not, this surgeon uses swords to operate upon people, patches them up with adhesive bandages and then gives them blood as medicine and his temporary operation theatre - a temple in Bihar's Vaishali district.

"I have operated with sword and needle. People believe me and that's what matters," says the 'doctor' who goes by the name of Shankar Baba.

Those who undergo surgery are later made to drink the baba's blood to recover fast. The man claims to possess a cure for diseases other than appendicitis too.

His treatment methods include jumping on the stomach and neck of patients, who could be as young as six years old and he charges his patients anything between Indian Rs 51(US$ 1.25) and Rs 500( US$ 12.5) depending on the 'treatment'.

Priests preferred to Doctors for cure

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Here are tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh state in India who still believe in community priests rather than medical practitioners to cure diseases.

Close to half of the 1.1 million population of the state, bordering Tibet and Myanmar, are either animists or believers of a primitive faith called Donyi Polo whose followers worship the sun and moon gods.

Lui Sena had been running a high fever accompanied by a splitting headache for the past 10 days. After herbal remedies and a visit to a doctor failed to cure the eight-year-old boy, Sena's parents carried him in a makeshift stretcher made of bamboo staves to 72-year-old Dera Topu, the village priest.

Squatted on the wooden floor of his stilted bamboo and straw hut, Topu was engrossed in prayers with his eyes closed and hands folded. The priest chanted hymns and fanned Sena with a multi-coloured hornbill feather.

"This boy is haunted by evil spirits and now I have to ward off the spirit. No medicines or doctors could cure the boy. You did the right thing by coming to me," the priest told Sena's parents.

An hour later, the little boy said he was feeling comfortable.

Isn't it strange that in this "Scientific, 21st century world", still there are people who believe in all such weird practices!!!!

In a bizarre incident in Chandigarh city in India, a Punjab police inspector after getting Fed up with waiting for someone to attend to him — who had taken his sick daughter for treatment to the PGI hospital here — took out his service revolver, pointed it at the forehead of a doctor, and asked her to hurry up. The little girl, suffering from a kidney ailment and just a year-and-half old, had been taken to the hospital , but even after waiting four hours, she didn’t get any medical attention.

Terrified, Doctor Anju Gupta called for the security, and soon there was chaos as she tried to get protection from the gun-toting inspector, Kanwalpreet Singh. Coming to the cop’s defence, brother-in-law Inderjeet Singh — whose father Darshanjit Singh Dhindsa is the Hoshiarpur SP said, "We had been waiting for over four hours. But there was no one to attend to the child. In rage, Kanwalpreet took out his revolver." Read more.........Cop pulls out gun to get child treated
