Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister B M Lanong's controversial remarks calling women activists "vipers" has evoked vociferous protests from women's organisations who boycotted functions to mark the International Women's Day today.

Cigarette-holding Jesus in school book triggers row

Shillong, Feb 19 : Pictures of Jesus Christ holding a cigarette in one hand and a beer can in another in a book for primary classes has triggered a row in Meghalaya and the state government is now contemplating legal action against the New Delhi-based publisher.

SHILLONG: India could eye a hattrick in the Guinness Book of World Records with a man from Meghalaya vying for a place in the record books with the maximum number of fingers and toes.

Largest 'Jalebi' for Guiness Book of World Records

Jalebi (Hindi: जलेबी; Urdu: جلیبی ) is a fried sweet made from maida flour, commonly prepared in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Jalebi is thought to have originated in the northern India, most likely in the Punjab region. It is made by deep-frying batter in a pretzel shape, instead of the funnel cake shape common in the U.S., then soaked in syrup.

Now Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum in India is preparing to make the largest "jalebi" to feature in Guiness Book of World Records.

The attempt of frying the jelebi (75 inch diameter), large enough to cover a human being, will be made by a local confectionary - Delhi Mistan Bhandar - during the festival that starts on November 1.

MTDF Chairman R G Lyngdoh said the jelebi would weigh around 20 kg and would be fried in a pan of six feet three inches diameter.

Poll booths face threat from Elephants

Election Poll rigging by Elephants!!!!!!!!!!!! No No No...................Election officials in Meghalaya state of India are facing an elephantine problem to ensure that voting for March three polls is not disrupted by marauding pachyderms.

Playing safe, election authorities are marking several booths as "sensitive" not from a communal angle or law and order factor but being vulnerable to possible attacks from elephants in the light of previous experience.

Officials here said a scenario like a herd of drunk wild elephants moving dangerously near an election booth, chasing away election officials and destroying electronic voting machines is very much in the realm of possibility. What is common between binge-drinking elephants & socialite Paris Hilton? Yes, Paris Hilton, had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol & in India pachyderms get drunk on farmers' homemade rice beer & then go on a rampage.

Conservationists on Tuesday hailed socialite Paris Hilton, who has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, for apparently trying to highlight the cause of binge-drinking elephants in northeastern India.

Activists said a celebrity endorsement was sure to raise awareness of the plight of the pachyderms that get drunk on farmers' homemade rice beer then go on a rampage. Last month, six wild elephants that broke into a farm in the state of Meghalaya were electrocuted after discovering and drinking the potent brew then uprooting an electricity pole.

"There would have been more casualties if the villagers hadn't chased them away. And four elephants died in a similar way three years ago. It is just so sad," Hilton was quoted as saying in Tokyo last week.

"The elephants get drunk all the time. It is becoming really dangerous. We need to stop making alcohol available to them," she said in a report posted on the World Entertainment News Network Web site. Elephants die after Beer binge

Six elephants, including three calves, died after raiding an Indian village's rice beer and rampaging through a paddy field where they were electrocuted, as per the officials and residents.

Enticed by the aroma of rice beer being brewed by local tribal people, a herd of about 40 wild elephants came sniffing around the village of Chandan Nukat, about 250km west of Shillong, the capital of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya.

The elephants gorged on the beer on Sunday night after taking apart casks kept outside by local villagers and ran through a nearby paddy field that had an electrical pole running through it. Read more.........Elephants die after beer binge
