Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government plans to write “I am poor” on walls of houses of people who hold ‘below poverty line’ (BPL) cards to discourage the non-deserving families from availing benefits of the scheme, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said recently.

Talking to newsmen on the conclusion of the four-day special assembly session, convened to discuss the issue of creating a golden state, the chief minister said the government was compelled to curtail the foodgrain quota of the poor because the central government was providing grains for 41 lakh BPL families while there were 61 lakh such families in the state. Here is sorry state of affairs with Government machinery in India where over 10 lakh (1 million) tonnes of food grains worth several hundred crores of rupees, which could have fed over one crore hungry people for a year, were damaged in Food Corporation of India godowns during the last one decade.

The damages were suffered despite the FCI spending Rs 242 crore (Rs 2.42 billion) while trying to prevent any loss of food grains during storage. Ironically another 2.59 crore was spent just to dispose off the rotten food grains.

These startling facts came in reply to a Right to Information application filed by a Delhi resident. FCI informed that 10 lakh tonnes of food grain was damaged in the godowns of government owned agency which is responsible for procurement and distribution of food grains across the country. As per one Zee News report the level of corruption is "alarming" in Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, says a new survey based on experience of Below Poverty Line (BPL) households in availing various public services last year.

The 'India Corruption Study 2007', brought out by NGOs Transparency International India (TII) and Centre for Media Studies (CMS), found that about one-third of Below Poverty Line (BPL) households in the country bribed officials to avail a total of 11 services -- from police to PDS.

According to the survey, which covered 22,728 households in all states and Union Territories, Rs 8,830 million, in all, was estimated to be paid as bribe by BPL households last year. Read more here........................`India`s poor paid over Rs 8000 mn as bribe in 2007`

As per one Unicef report in BBC,

"India has the worst indicators of child malnutrition in South Asia: 48% of under fives in India are stunted, compared to 43% in Bangladesh and 37% in Pakistan.

Meanwhile 30% of babies in India are born underweight, compared to 22% in Bangladesh and 19% in Pakistan. Unicef calculates that 40% of all underweight babies in the world are Indian.

Put all that in hard numbers and the figures are stark. Fifty million Indian under fives are affected by malnutrition. Rising food prices, Unicef says mean 1.5 to 1.8 million more children in India alone could end up malnourished

Mantu Verma of Hariharpur village sold the girl on Dec 1 to Ranthu Kerketta, a government employee of Simega district.

According to the reports, Verma's wife got burnt some months ago but he was unable to pay for her treatment. When his condition became so bad that he could not buy food for his wife and daughter, Verma decided to sell the latter.

Kerketta denied he had bought the girl. 'I have adopted Pinki to save her from falling into wrong hands. I already have four children. Now Pinki leads a good life where she can get food,' he said.

Living on less than 26 cents a day, there are 200 million such Indians

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

Can anyone ever dream off, two third of American population living on less than 26 cents a day? India is nowadays being projected as 'India Shining', it's economy booming, it's GDP growing at 8-9 % per annum. But how much it is benefiting the rural Indian population, below data shall reveal very much. As per one News report here is some startling data. This data is as per one report prepared by The National Sample Survey Organization.

a) More than 200 million people in rural India, lived on 12 Indian rupees
(26 cents) a day or less.
b) In India Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chattisgarh and
Uttar Pradesh are the poorest Indian states.
c) In Orissa and Chattisgarh 55 to 57 percent of villagers lived on 12
Indian rupees (26 cents) a day.
d) 10 percent of the rural population all across India lived on just 9
Indian rupees (20 cents) a day.
e) 30 percent of poor in India's cities lived on just 19 Indian rupees
(42 cents) a day.
f) 10 percent of poor in India's cities lived on just 13 Indian
rupees (28 cents) a day.
g) In Madhya Pradesh, 47 percent of the rural population lived on
12 Indian rupees (26 cents) a day, followed by Bihar and Jharkhand,
where 46 percent were living on that amount.
h) In Uttar Pradesh, 33 percent of the rural population lived on 12
Indian rupees (26 cents) a day, while in Maharashtra, home to India's
financial hub, Mumbai, 30 percent lived on that amount.
i) In Bihar, as many as 55 percent of the urban population were living
on 19 Indian rupees (42 cents) a day, followed by Orissa with 50 percent.

Isn't these are weird statistics & show how benefits of economic boom in India are hardly reaching the rural masses.
