Former BSF constable Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya has been living with a militant’s bullet in his body for over a decade but it is the pain of being a forgotten soldier that hurts the most.

Justice S.P. Talukdar of Calcutta High Court eased some of that pain on Thursday when he gave the director-general of the BSF two weeks to ensure that Pijush got everything that a soldier injured in the line of duty was entitled to.

Critically wounded in an encounter with extremists in Manipur in 1997, Pijush has been surviving on a monthly pension of Rs 1,913, far less than what he had been promised.

“I wrote to the director-general in July 2006 and waited a year for a reply but he didn’t bother sending one. I have faith in the judiciary but I will believe that justice has been done only after receiving my dues,” the former constable told Metro from his home in Adi Kasempur village, Barasat. He lives there with his 72-year-old mother, wife and teenaged son. Read more........................................Soldier with bullet in body denied dues

Pari died on Oct 30 and her children from her first marriage want her last rites to be performed according to Hindu rituals while her second husband and daughter want a burial, local reports said.

Both the families have now approached the Calcutta High Court seeking to perform her last rites according to their own religious practices.

Shopkeepers Begging for Coins from Beggars

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In Calcutta city in West Bengal state of India shopkeepers are begging for coins from the beggars and buying coins at prices above their face value. Reason, there is sudden shortage of coins in this city of 14 million.

Reserve Bank of India has resorted to the emergency measures, distributing millions of coins to satisfy the demand.

Since the coin shortage became acute at the beginning of June, the bank has distributed nearly 5 million rupees (US$121,950; Euro 91,664.16) worth of coins, including one million on Thursday alone, said Nilanjan Saha, the bank's treasurer in the city.

But the emergency supplies have failed to appease the demand & nearly 2,000 people stood in two lines on a recent day at the bank to exchange currency notes for coins, many planning to resell them for a profit.

One woman, who asked not to be named, set up shop outside the bank selling packets of 100 rupee coins for 120 rupees.

"It may sound strange, but we have found that beggars are a good source of coins," said Mum Poddar, who runs a small shop selling stationary.

Bank officials said they were mystified by the shortage.

"There is no reason," said Saha. "But I have heard reports that some unscrupulous traders were melting coins because the face value of the coins are lower than the metal value."

The bank was also investigating claims the coins were being melted down to make razor blades.

There are "reports that as many as six blades can be made from one single one rupee coin," said bank security officer Subal Chandra Naskar.

Here is a 5 years old Indian boy named "Budhia" , whose mother, unable to support him, was about to sell him to another villager for Indian Rupees 800 (US$18; 15 Euros) when the family met Biranchi Das two years ago, who is an athletic coach & Das started coaching the little "Budhia".

Now this 5-year-old Indian boy is planning to walk 500 kilometers (311 miles), as per his coach.

"Budhia" will begin his marathon in Bhubaneswar in the eastern state of Orissa and finish in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state, said the coach, Biranchi Das.
It will begin on June 6 and take about 10 days, he said.

While Das argued the boy's walk would inspire other young athletes, child advocates are opposing the the news.

Last year, Budhia tried to run a 70km marathon, but doctors stopped him after 65km when he showed signs of extreme exhaustion. But Das insisted he is looking after the best interests of the boy.

"The aim is to make our children and children all over the world know if they start now they can qualify for the 2016 Olympics," he said.
