Karwar (Karnataka): Offering flowers, sweets and fruits to god has been a part of age-old tradition in Hinduism but in Karwar district of Karnataka, devotees offer alcohol and cigarettes to Lord Muneshwara.

Scores of devotees from all over the country including Maharashtra and Goa visit this temple to get their wishes fulfilled by offering cigarettes and alcohol.ccording to Anand Raj Naik, a priest of Muneshwara temple, alcohol and cigarettes were liked by Him. What is common between binge-drinking elephants & socialite Paris Hilton? Yes, Paris Hilton, had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol & in India pachyderms get drunk on farmers' homemade rice beer & then go on a rampage.

Conservationists on Tuesday hailed socialite Paris Hilton, who has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, for apparently trying to highlight the cause of binge-drinking elephants in northeastern India.

Activists said a celebrity endorsement was sure to raise awareness of the plight of the pachyderms that get drunk on farmers' homemade rice beer then go on a rampage. Last month, six wild elephants that broke into a farm in the state of Meghalaya were electrocuted after discovering and drinking the potent brew then uprooting an electricity pole.

"There would have been more casualties if the villagers hadn't chased them away. And four elephants died in a similar way three years ago. It is just so sad," Hilton was quoted as saying in Tokyo last week.

"The elephants get drunk all the time. It is becoming really dangerous. We need to stop making alcohol available to them," she said in a report posted on the World Entertainment News Network Web site. Alcoholic Rats raid Liquor Store

Getting alcoholic is not in the domain of humans only. In India Rats have developed a taste for alcohol and are chewing into beer cans and whiskey bottle tops at a police storehouse.

Rats are gnawing at beer cans and making holes in caps of whisky bottles stored in police storehouses in eastern India and apparently getting drunk, authorities said.

The rodents' love for liquor has the police department in Bihar state of India stumped as it tries to store hundreds of bottles seized from illegal sellers from across the state in Capital City Patna, said Kundan Krishnan, a senior officer.

"We are fed up with these drunk rats and cannot explain why they have suddenly turned to consumption of alcohol," he said.

The problem costs revenue as the seized liquor is usually sold through auctions, he said.

Rats were also attacking people near the police buildings, nibbling at their toes, although it was not clear if they were under the influence, officials and witnesses said.

Film Star in trouble for alcohol ads

In India any Public figure doing alcohol ads is not liked by many people & many times it brews a storm with the masses. Earlier it was Cricketer Ace off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who created tension among the Sikhs in the country when he appeared in an alcohol ad for keeping his hair open in the advertisement.

Harbhajan Singh, who was pulled up by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee [S.G.P.C.], the apex religious body of Sikhs, had said that he respected emotions of the people of his community and did not do it intentionally. Later he apologized to the Sikh community for 'hurting' their emotions by keeping his hair open in the ad. 'If my action has hurt the Sikh community, then I feel sorry for it. I will take note of it (in future),' Harbhajan had said at that time.

Now its the turn of leading Southern Indian film star, Mohanlal against whom Prohibition activists are making lot of noises, as he has appeared in whisky advertisements. They want the actor to apologize for violating laws that ban direct liquor advertisements.

Mohanlal has a huge fan base in Kerala for his roles in local Malayalam language films. He has also had some Bollywood hits. Protesters say his appearance in the whisky campaign will encourage alcoholism. Kerala has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in India.
