‘Dead horses’ come alive

Srinagar, In a glaring example of man’s apathy towards animals, two horses given up as dead turned out to be alive after a fortnight in Srinagar Wednesday.

People in the uptown Rawalpora area of the city Wednesday called the helpline telephone numbers set up by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) during the recent windstorm, complaining about the carcasses of two horses lying in the local swamp for the last fortnight. With a gift of six horses worth a little over Rs.35 million ($850,000), New Delhi is attempting to build bridges with Bangladesh’s army chief in an attempt to persuade the eastern neighbour to cease support to anti-India insurgent groups operating from that country. Horses get Pension

You could call it Horses pension! Horses retiring from a West Bengal police training college now have a new home to spend their twilight years with other comforts.

Fourteen ageing animals that have served for years have not ended up pariahs or been slaughtered like their predecessors. Instead the green acres of Ashari, an animal hospital-cum-shelter on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, run by Maneka Gandhi's People for Animal (PFA), is now their home.

"They have served for years. Now it is only human to pension them off instead of slaughtering them after they turn infirm.
