Grave Benefits: Where, even dead get pension

LUCKNOW: UP is a classic case of corruption where even dead are being given old-age pension. This way, a sum of Rs 4.21 crore, was given away as pension and transferred to 18,461 accounts of the dead persons between 2007-09.

"What is disturbing is that no steps have so far been taken to seek refund of this amount for the past three years even after detecting the lapses on part of the social welfare department," the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India said in its latest report. 100-year-old says - I don't need a pension, I can work

According to official records Bandhu Das is 100 years old, though he claims he is older. However old he may be, age has not been a deterrent for Das who leads an active life and refuses to take old age pension from the government.

Das is poor but he says he says he needs no help from the government and is strong enough to earn his bread and butter.

Reaching pension office costs more than Royal pension

To get Rs.1.06 to Rs.600 royal pension, descendants of the erstwhile Awadh rulers settled abroad do not mind spending thousands of rupees to come here just to collect their royal pension, or wasiqa in Urdu, of a few hundred rupees. They say it is a mark of their royal legacy.

Horses get Pension

You could call it Horses pension! Horses retiring from a West Bengal police training college now have a new home to spend their twilight years with other comforts.

Fourteen ageing animals that have served for years have not ended up pariahs or been slaughtered like their predecessors. Instead the green acres of Ashari, an animal hospital-cum-shelter on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, run by Maneka Gandhi's People for Animal (PFA), is now their home.

"They have served for years. Now it is only human to pension them off instead of slaughtering them after they turn infirm. 12-year-old getting pension since birth
