‘Dead horses’ come alive

Srinagar, In a glaring example of man’s apathy towards animals, two horses given up as dead turned out to be alive after a fortnight in Srinagar Wednesday.

People in the uptown Rawalpora area of the city Wednesday called the helpline telephone numbers set up by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) during the recent windstorm, complaining about the carcasses of two horses lying in the local swamp for the last fortnight. 'Blood Sucking' therapy

"Every Friday, patients come to Kadir, who sits outside the gates of the Hazratbal shrine in downtown Srinagar with water-filled jars that contain hungry leeches ready to suck blood.

Kadir places three leeches on the affected part of the patient's body and they begin to suck blood. After the leeches are removed, the patient is left bleeding but there are no complaints.

Instead, they thank Kadir, pay him his fees and make an appointment for another session."
