Puri: The pomp and splendour was all there when the bride and groom tied the nuptial knot in a village in Orissa - not a marriage of human beings but of two trees in a gesture aimed at preserving the green cover.

Villagers performed this unusual 'marriage' at Jimiti in the coastal district of Puri, some 60 km from here, in the hope that the gods will help them to preserve all trees in their locality. Read more......................................Villagers perform tree 'wedding' to send green message

When Queen can visit Temple once in Lifetime

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!

In India, rituals in some temples look strange some times. Take the case of "Queen-designate" of Puri in Orissa state of India where the Maharani of Puri, Lilabati Pattamahadei, undertook a rare ritual, as she visited the 12th century Sri Jagannath temple here to offer prayers over the weekend.

Here is the "Queen-designate" of Puri who stays just in front of the famous Lord Jagannath temple of Orissa in Puri but for the Maharani it was virtually inaccessible as per temple rules & regulations. She has had to wait for nearly three decades to get a darshan of the Lord. The event comes only once in the lifetime of the Maharani.

The last time that a Maharani of the royal family visited the temple was in 1966.
Interestingly "Loknath", a boy at the Temple performed the traditional rituals for the "Queen-designate" as no other man / temple priest could be present as per the rituals in the temple when she was there.

American fined US$4.70 for entering Hindu Temple

The Jagannath Temple at Puri in Orissa State of India is a famous Hindu temple & is dedicated to Lord Jagannath which is another form of mythological Lord Vishnu. It's a 12th century shrine. This temple is a pilgrimage spot for all the Hindus. The temple is also famous for its Rath Yatra i.e. Chariot festival, in which huge and beautifully decorated chariots are used for the procession of various deities.

An American tourist has good reason to feel shortchanged after his visit to a Hindu holy site in eastern India on Friday_ not only was he kicked out for being a non-Hindu, he was also fined 209 rupees (US$4.70; euro3.60) by irate temple priests.

The man, identified by officials at the Jagannath Temple in the city of Puri as Paul Roediger, a 59-year-old engineer from New York, was handed over to police along with two Hindu friends who went in with him, said temple spokesman L.D. Pujapanda.

"The men were released later after they said that they were unaware of the temple rules. However, Mr. Paul was fined 209 rupees as per the temple law," Pujapanda said.

Roediger left shortly afterward and could not be found for comment.

The temple, dedicated to Jagannath, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, is particularly popular with Hindus because all casts are allowed in.

That tolerance is not extended to non-Hindus. The temple once famously refused entrance to then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi because she married a non-Hindu, forcing her to view the shrine from across the street.

Puri, once of the four holiest Hindu pilgrim sites, is 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Bhubaneswar, the capital of the eastern state of Orissa.

Earlier there have been complaints against the Priests over there for their unruly behavior in and outside the shrine. But as per one Times of India report, the latest incident was the most embarrassing one for the priestly clan when Police arrested Jagannath Khuntia, a 38-year-old priest, after catching him red-handed trying to snatch a gold necklace and earrings from a devotee inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Earlier police in the last six months, had received around 15 complaints of snatching and pick pocketing inside one of the country's most revered shrines.
