PIPRIA SINGIPUR (Uttar Pradesh): Can you imagine a power outage for nine long years? That's exactly what this village in Pilibhit district has had to endure after its main transformer developed a snag in 2001. Pilibhit is the parliamentary constituency of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Varun Gandhi.

While an engineer in the power corporation says he is aware of the problem, the district administration claims it is not in the know. Despite having all the power supply equipment in place, the 700 residents of Pipria Singipur, some 250 km from Lucknow, have been living without electricity for over nine years. Indian village bodies ban paying of power bills

In Ambala district, upset with the state government's failure to supply regular electricity, at least 25 panchayats or village bodies in Haryana state of India have issued an order to villagers not to pay power bills.

The decision to ban payment of electricity bills by residents in 25 villages was taken at a meeting held at Barada village, 20 km from this district headquarter town.

Travelling 60 kms to pay power bills

It may sound weird at a time when India is fast moving on the path of development, but the residents of a village in Rajasthan have to travel over 60 km just to pay their electricity bills.

The people of Sooeen village, about 430 km from state capital Jaipur in Rajasthan state of India, have to travel 60 km to Lunkarsar in Bikaner district just to pay their electricity bills.
