Indian police have foiled a bid by robbers to make off with a truck laden with onions, in an unusual crime apparently motivated by rocketing prices of the staple food.

Three men stopped a truck on the main road from the western city of Jaipur to the capital New Delhi on Sunday on the pretence that their vehicle had been damaged in a collision.

After accusing the truck driver of causing the accident, one of the men jumped behind the wheel and the others fled.

Police were quickly alerted and they erected barricades on surrounding roads to stop the thieves.

Seeing their route blocked, the men abandoned their loot and escaped on foot, allowing the grateful truck driver to continue on his journey. Read full story here

To buy Onions, Chief Minister's Wife Seeks Loan

In a bid to rub it in, the wife of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Thursday filled up an application for a bank loan - to buy onions!

Sadhna Singh is also vice-president of the women's cell of the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who took part in a street protest here against the soaring prices of onions.

Onions, garlic and chillies don't just spice up your favourite dish, they can also keep pests at bay. And now five school students in Uttar Pradesh have used them to prepare an eco-friendly pesticide.
The biopesticide has been prepared by students of GRM Senior Secondary School in Bareilly. It is one of the few projects from the state to be selected for the National Children's Science Congress (NCSC) to be held at Dimapur, Nagaland, from Dec 27 to 31.
