People in Himachal Pradesh state of India are known for keeping alive many traditions that find mention in ancient indian scriptures. "Gandharva Vivah", mentioned in epic Mahabharata, exists here in the form of an elopement marriage.

The custom has it that the young couples eager to perform "Gandharva Vivah" are expected to elope and, later, settle for a proper marriage as per traditional rituals.

In Kullu's Gramang Village, the prospective brides and bridegrooms have the liberty to choose their life partners of their choice. Following the custom, the lovers elope and on return to their homes, they are married off as per the local rituals in the presence of their Village deity.

"It has been going on since the times of the 'Pandavas' (victorious clan in the legendary Mahabharata war). We bring the girls here after running off with them and marry them. This is our tradition and everyone celebrates it with great zeal and enthusiasm," said Arun Kumar, a resident.

In another case a girl of a rich businessman ran away with her lover when family went to a temple to offer prayers. There are 114 such reported cases of girls running away with their lovers in New Delhi alone this year & many such cases had gone unreported too as families did not disclose all such incidents due to embarrassment & social stigma that shall be there with them, whole of their life by disclosing such incidents in the family.

Main reason for all such elopement is that parents force their daughters to marry someone, she doesn't like. Family fails to understand that girl has the right to choose the person whom she wants to be with, whole of her life. Now a days, girls are more assertive about what they want. In earlier times in India, it was just unthinkable, but now girls marry only that person, whom they want to marry, as per their own choice. Now if parents can understand all this, then only this running shall stop. Read more..........Delhi's runaway brides
