Parents chop off girl's nose over her love marriage

Raipur: Seven close relatives of a girl, including her parents, were arrested on Friday in a remote village of Chhattisgarh after they chopped off her nose to punish her for eloping with and marrying a village boy, police said.

Jat body announces reward for anyone chopping Steve Bucknor's finger

In India people are really crazy about the game of cricket. Take the prevailing Indian cricket team's tour in Australia where there is an anger against the umpire Steve Bucknor for giving wrong decisions. Now the anger against the West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor today reached absurd length when a little-known caste outfit offered a reward of Rs one lakh (US$ 2500) and land to anyone chopping his finger.

Protesting against Bucknor, who has been involved in a string of dubious decisions against India in the second Test against Australia, All India Bharatiya Jat Mahasabha Mandal President Vivek Kajla said besides the cash, hundred bigha of land would be given to anyone removing the umpire's finger.

Activists of Shiv Sena and BJP burnt effigies of the West Indian umpire and demanded that India withdraw from the Australian tour.

Men chop off holy man's 'magical' leg

Two men attacked a self-proclaimed holy man in southern India and chopped off his right leg, apparently believing it had magical powers, police said Thursday.

The 80-year-old Yanadi Kondaiah, who claimed that those who touched his leg would be cured of illness or have wishes granted, was in a hospital in serious condition after the attack Tuesday, said R. Ravindranath Reddy, a senior police officer.

"We are looking for the miscreants as well as the leg," Reddy told The Associated Press by telephone from the Chittoor district, a remote area some 550 kilometers (340 miles) south of Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state.

"This seems to be a case of superstition. The two people might have taken away the leg hoping to benefit from its magical powers," said Pendakanti Dastgiri, the police officer handling the case.

Superstitions, belief in magic and the occult remain widespread in much of rural India.

Kondaiah told police two men offered him a drink as thanks for previously helping them with his magical touch.

After he passed out drunk the men chopped off the leg below the knee with a sickle and left him to die, said Dastgiri, adding that passing villagers found him and took him to a local hospital.
