KOLKATA: An immersed Kali idol near Howrah apparently rose from its watery vault in the Hooghly, convincing thousands of a miracle and turning a temple into a pilgrimage spot on Monday. A bunch of rationalists has since tried to reason that it had a more earthly explanation: a hurried immersion, combined with a trick played by the tide. Read More................A miracle? KOLKATA: There is nothing different about the Kali idol. But one look at the `bhog' - noodles, chopsuey, rice-and-vegetables dishes - and you realize this isn't just any Kali temple.

In the heart of Kolkata's Tangra area -- India's own Chinatown -- stands this unique symbol of cross-cultural assimilation. The `Chinese Kali Temple' (so the marble plaque says) is not only a bridge between Chinese and Indian cultures, but also strengthens bonds within the Chinese community. Dogs Offer Prayers at Hindu Temple

It may seem weird but its true. In Buxar town, about 125 km from Patna city in Bihar state of India, here is a "Kali Temple" where dozens of dogs have since 1965 been religiously queuing up twice a day outside the temple - just in time for the daily ritual services.

Dogs religiously join morning & evening prayers & as per one devotee, Mahavir Singh: "At the time of prayers in the temple when devotees perform different rituals, blowing a conch or chanting hymns, dozens of dogs join by barking with their heads up."

"These dogs have been joining the prayers without a miss ever since 1965 when the temple came up," he added.

These stray dogs visit the temple in the morning and in the evening just before the "Artis" ( religious prayer). They are also given "Prasad" ( remnants of offerings made to the Deity) by the devotees.

Kali is a Hindu Goddess who is the animating force of Lord Shiva, the God of destruction (also lord of the Dance). With Kali worship is associated skulls, cemeteries, and blood.

In Kali worship tradition, around 650 goats were sacrificed at a Kali temple in Orissa state in India as part of an annual ritual despite a ban by the local administration.

The sacrifice was made at the Rakshya Kali temple at Rameswarpur village in Bhadrak district, about 170 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, Saturday night. The incident came to light Monday after some officials and villagers reported it.

The mass sacrifice is held once a year in the Hindu month of Chaitra. 'Our village is always guarded by Rakshya Kali. It is a 72-year-old tradition,' villager Dibakar Barik said.

'Earlier, devotees used to offer buffaloes as sacrifice. Now we sacrifice goats,' he said.

According to local police, who witnessed the event, the area around the temple's sacrificial altar was soaked in blood. The animals were first garlanded before being led to the altar and their cries got drowned by the beating of drums.

Some devotees even scrambled to touch the blood of the sacrificed animals, believed to be auspicious and a good omen, while some even smeared it on their forehead, an official said on condition of anonymity.

Religion makes man cut his tongue

Blind faith in anything can be dangerous many times & can lead to a mishap as it blinds ones intellect & clouds the rational reasoning. Something similar has happened, when in a bizarre incident, during "Navratras" festival , one man from Ludhiana city in Punjab state of India cut his own tongue to offer it to goddess "Kali". "Navratras" is a religious festival of the Hindus, where people worship Goddess Durga & Kali by fasting & performing religious ceremonies during nine days period of the festival.

Man was immediately rushed to the government civil hospital here on Monday after he cut his own tongue to offer it to the goddess.

Doctors at the civil hospital performed a surgery on the man after people rushed him there as he was bleeding profusely.

The doctors were able to stitch the tongue back.

So here is a classic example when religion makes one do weird acts in the name of religion.
