One in seven people go to bed hungry,every day in India

Today, India's benchmark Bombay Stock Excahnge Index ( BSE) crossed 19,000 & it is daily making new high records. India may be the second fastest growing economy in the world but it still has a long way to go in eradicating hunger where it is ranked at 94th position well behind neighbouring China and Pakistan, a global report says.

According to the latest Global Hunger Index 2007 from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), although India has improved its score of 25.03 on the index compared to 33.73 in 1990, it is lagging behind China and Pakistan ranked at 47th and 88th positions, out of the total list 118 countries, respectively.

The index is mainly based on proportion of undernourished in the population, prevalence of underweight in children under five years and those under-five mortality rate.

"One in seven people go to bed hungry every day. That's 854 million people worldwide. Hunger is one of the world's major problems and therefore one of its most important challenges," say the report's authors.

Wedding on a hospital bed

Till now you have heard of marriages taking place in temples, churches, community halls etc. but here is an interesting story from Bihar state of India where a marriage was solemnized on a hospital bed. This happened when Nawal Kumar who was going to marry Renu was attacked by some criminals when he was on his way to the bride's house at Mojipur village in Fatuha for the marriage. Ultimately Nawal Kumar married Renu on a hospital bed in Gaya.

"Some armed criminals attacked the bus carrying Kumar's marriage party and looted cash, gold chains and other valuables worth more than Rs.50,000. They also beat Kumar and others, in which his right leg was fractured," said Sanjay Kumar, a friend of the bridegroom.

Frightened after the attack, in which a dozen others were also injured, the marriage party returned to Kumar's village under the Barachatti police station in Gaya, a Maoist stronghold, without solemnizing the marriage.

The groom's father Ashok Kumar Tamrkar informed the bride's family about the incident and expressed his inability to visit their village for the marriage.
"I told the bride's father Raju Mistri that they have to come to Gaya for the marriage, otherwise I will cancel it because my family members and relatives were refusing to proceed to his village," Tamrkar said.

The bride and her family came to the hospital, where Kumar was lying on bed with a plastered leg and the marriage was solemnized by a priest with the chanting of hymns. Women offered prayers and conducted some rituals at a temple near the hospital.

Hundreds of people, including the hospital staff, nurses and doctors of the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College hospital, where Kumar is admitted, watched this unique marriage.

Man Beaten to Death for making Wooden Bed

He got death sentence for cutting a tree!!!! Poor man wanted to make a bed to sleep on it so he had cut a tree but he was laid to rest permanently.

Yes, 35-year-old Jeevan Munda was allegedly beaten to death by forest officials in Katkamasandi block of Hazaribagh district, about 130 km from the state capital Ranchi in Jharkhand state of India. His crime was that he had cut a tree in the Hazaribagh National Park with which he wanted to make a bed.

Three forest officials came to Jeevan's house and inquired about the cot. They suspected that Jeevan had illegally cut a tree in the Hazaribagh National Park to make it.

"The forest officials dragged my husband to the forest asking about the wooden cot. They wanted to know how he got the wooden cot," said Jeevan's wife Etwaria Devi.

Jeevan's dead body was recovered from the jungle. Etwaria has lodged a first information report (FIR) against the three forest officials alleging that they killed her husband.
