Poverty has driven a family in an Uttar Pradesh village to give away their three children in bondage against a loan of Rs.42,000.

The children have to now toil for 12 hours a day to make up for the loan taken by the family, a distraught relative said.

This followed a request by Sharif Ahmad to get an electricity connection in Milakrota village of Bareilly district, about 250 km from here, around four months ago. Read More................Family pawns children for a loan

Debt-ridden man's daughter rescued from Money lender

A teenaged girl, handed over to a money lender by her father who failed to repay a loan of Rs.15,000, was rescued by police from Ghaziabad Sunday, an official said.

Sub-divisional magistrate Pushpa Devrar said: 'Police have informed me that the girl has been rescued today (Sunday) evening. Chandigarh : Mohan Lal couldn't repay a debt of Rs 35,000. So he sold off his 13-year-old daughter. Thankfully for the aghast teenager, though, her elder sister got whiff of the deal and rushed to her rescue. The police, too, acted swiftly on the complaint and rounded up Mohan Lal, a Yamunanager resident, on Thursday. The man to whom the girl had been sold in marriage was also arrested under the Child Marriage Act as was his father and mother who bitterly complained that they had paid a lot of money for the child. About 20,000 farmers on the verge of committing suicides due to debt from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu states of India have found a novel way to get rid of their debts.

Kisan(Farmers) Coordination Committee (KCC) has come out with a "novel plan" to "bid goodbye" to debt by dumping loan documents in the sea at Rameswaram city in Tamil Nadu state of India on the eve of the new year. They are expected to converge in Rameswaram city to take part in the "Karj Mukti" (liberation from the debt) agitation to "sink" the debt documents in the Sea!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We want to start our life in 2008 with absolutely no debt. We want to put an end to farmers' suicides," as per Govind Joshi, an executive member of KCC, who said they have planned a farmers' rally on December 31,2007 coinciding with the committee's executive meeting.
