Jaipur: Rajasthan Police are probing if a recent case of arson in Pratapgarh district is a fallout of the tribal system of collecting 'death money' from a person causing someone's death and resorting to protests and even violence if it is not paid, officials said.

The 'Mautana' tradition, literally the 'death money', prevalent in Rajasthan's Mewar region covering Pratapgarh, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand and Udaipur districts, has created serious law and order situations recently, they said. In a village in Jharkhand state of India, a strange centuryold custom is prevalent in the tribal hamlet of Dardaha, which prevents the residents from encouraging guests to stay overnight at the village, for they believe something bad may befall them.

Non-tribals are free to move around the village, but only till dusk. Once the sun sets, the villagers are not willing to allow the dikus (outsiders) to spend the night, because they think they may incur the wrath of the kuldevta (village god), which can be fatal, claimed a tribal expert of the region, Shyam Sunder Mahto.
