Punjab Government in India has decided to offer Vacant land of various Jails in Punjab for setting up multiplexes and shopping malls.

Punjab cabinet approved the transfer of vacant land of jails at Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Ferozpore to the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB) for commercial use.

As the cities and towns expanded, these jail properties had come to be in their centre. Jail officials had also expressed security concerns about these jails being inside towns.

Nearly 300 acres of land for an open jail in Kapurthala district would also be transferred to a state government agency for setting up a new industrial focal point there.

A proposal for a multi-specialty hospital for treating prisoners was also cleared for Faridkot district. This will cater to prisoners of all Punjab jails.
