Panaji: A three-month-old child was hospitalised here after the baby was given Dettol instead of polio drops at a health centre in Goa, the state's leader of opposition said. Officials Saturday confirmed the incident but said the child's father, and not the hospital, had made the mistake.

Bride and groom administered polio drops

PATNA: It may sound strange but it's true nevertheless. A bride and a groom were administered polio drops by health volunteers in a Bihar village.

The groom, five-year-old Rohan Kumar, and his four-year-old bride Soni Kumari were administered polio drops by volunteers of the pulse polio eradication drive at Hisua in Nawada district, about 160 km from here. Read more.............................Bride and groom administered polio drops

Priests Bless Children with Polio Drops

Whenever, you go to a temple in India, priests over there normally bless the people with holy water, flowers, garlands, sweets or fruits. But here in Bihar state of India Hindu priests are blessing children with polio drops to help eradicate the crippling disease. This year, in the state 11 polio cases were reported in the children. Polio is a disease which can cause permanent paralysis in the children.

"We are keen to wipe out polio and we thought involving temple priests would be a good idea as people trust and listen to them," said Gopal Krishna, a senior Bihar health official.

Health officials in Bihar have trained hundreds of priests to give polio drops to immunize children, Gopal Krishna said.

"I was very surprised when the priest put polio drops into the mouths of several children, including my son, as god's blessings," said Sunita Devi, a resident of Patna, the state capital. "But we trust the priest as he can do us no harm."
