Ascetics, Saints & Devotees do penance for unlimited years to find God but here is a woman from Jharkhand state of India who has found God by climbing a Banyan Tree & praying over there.

Jhirgi Urain, aged 40, a resident of Pola, about 70 km from Ranchi in Jharkhand state of India, has become the centre of attraction in the village after she climbed up a banyan tree and said she will stay there till god wants her to. She went to offer obeisance to a tribal god on June 14 at the base of a banyan tree in her village. Later she climbed up the tree and started praying there.

Urain has been fasting since then and has not come down from the tree. She is only taking water.

When people asked her to come down, she said: "Unless god asks me to do so I will remain here."

A large number of people from far-flung villages are now thronging the banyan tree to offer their prayers to the woman.

"It seems god has entered into her. She is not behaving like a normal human being. Her speech and acts are like god," said Manohar, a villager.

"There is a strong belief in our religion that god finds his way inside a good soul and starts preaching people. Our Sarna god might have entered into her. We are worshipping her to appease our god," he said.

Marriage of Two Trees

In India, earlier some bizarre marriages of elephants, dogs etc. had been reported but this time it is the marriage of two trees, yes, marriage of two trees!!!!!! It was an Indian wedding in every sense with a colorful procession, the blowing of conch shells, the smearing of vermilion, a feast for over 2,000 guests......only the bride and the groom were trees!!!!!

It happened in Balia village in Orissa state of India. The marriage of the banyan tree with the peepal tree was not just another rural quirk, as it sent a powerful environmental message - to preserve the green cover for protection from killing heat waves that threaten Orissa every summer.

The marriage was organised at Balia village on the outskirts of Balasore town, some 230 km from Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar by residents, who also believe it would bring prosperity to the villagers.

"The wedding of these trees is considered auspicious. After deciding to hold the marriage, we consulted a priest who decided that Sunday was an auspicious day for the wedding as per the Oriya almanac," as per the "Malati Das", president of ‘Maa Thaneswari Self Help Group’ (SHG) of the village.

This SHG along with 21 other SHGs and villagers organised the wedding.

While the banyan tree was the bride, the peepal tree growing next to it was the groom. The villagers divided themselves into two groups, while Uttam Patra stood in as the father of the bride, Radha Mohan Das became the father of the groom.

The bridegroom's party came to marriage venue in a colourful procession. The ceremony was replete with firecrackers, dancing and a fire ritual.

The wedding was performed amidst the chanting of mantras by priests. They garlanded the trees and tied them together with a thread. With the sankha, sindur, tupura - all symbols of Oriya wedding rituals - in place, it was every bit a traditional wedding.

And there was a grand feast too, with food being served to over 2,000 guests!!!!!!!

Ghosts & Spirits released from 'Banyan tree'

"The Banyan Tree" is the National Tree of India. This huge tree has the widest reaching roots of all known trees. It sends off new shoots from its roots, so that one tree is really a tangle of branches, roots, and trunks. The banyan tree regenerates and lives for an incredible length of time-thus it is thought of as the immortal tree. India has a long history of honoring this tree & it figures prominently in many of the oldest stories of the nation.

But here is an interesting story of ghosts & spirits which were staying on a Banyan tree, which got released from it when it was cut down recently.

"Kothakurssi" is a place in Palakkad district in Kerala state of India which abounds in Banyan trees. Recently "Kothakurssi" had experienced seven accidental deaths and been cursed by the phenomenon of several people suddenly and inexplicably taking ill, all in a matter of 10 days.

To explain all sudden deaths an aged mullah vaguely recalled a similar phenomenon occurring in his childhood, when two kurikkals (Muslim physicians with magical powers) had been summoned from afar to investigate it and suggest remedies.

They had attributed the phenomenon to certain disgruntled spirits in the vicinity. They had propitiated the spirits and, with their magical powers & settled them in a banyan tree.

It was the very same tree, the mullah remembered, that had been mowed down just the week before the first of the recent accidental deaths.

The spirits, released from the tree, could well be at large again, he said. Everybody knew of the cutting down of the tree. The tree was cut as its roots were threatening the foundation of a shop.

Do you find any logic in such weird thinking of people over there or its just a case of superstition among the dwellers in the area that they are attributing all sudden deaths & illness to releasing of ghosts & spirits from the Banyan tree. Readers comments are welcome.
