Whether Aishwarya Rai married a tree before she wed Abhishek, may be debatable ( Amitabh Bachchan denied such reports after her marriage to Abhishek) but here is a bizarre marriage that actually happened between two Trees in Southern India.

Villagers of a non-descript hamlet Elakampalayam near Sirumuga village in Tamil Nadu state of India carried out a wedding between 'Neem' and 'Peepal' trees in an effort to spread the message to save trees & forests which are a boon of nature & for keeping the environment pollution-free.

The marriage was solemnized by priest of Balamuniyappa temple in the village amidst chanting of hymns and Nadaswaram recital, similar to a typical south Indian marriage.

The priest tied the nuptial knot on the Neem tree on behalf of the 'bridegroom' Peepal.

Both the trees were adorned with flowers. Neem tree was given a bridal look by draping a yellow silk saree over it while peepal was covered with a golden-silk saree, according to villagers who attended the 'marriage function'.

After the marriage, around 100 villagers assembled there blessed the 'couple' by throwing the 'sacred rice' mixed with vermilion and sandal in line with the tradition.

Amitabh Bachchan condemned by US Hindu reform group

As per a report A US-based international Hindu reform organisation has expressed disapproval of the ritualistic ceremonies performed by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan for his son Abhishek and fiancée Aishwarya Rai.

Aishwarya is a Manglik (astrologically Mars-bearing), which is believed to have negative consequences for her impending marriage. The actress is said to have married a peepal tree at Benaras, a banana tree at a Bangalore temple and a god's idol in Ayodhya.

The organisation Navya Shastra commends the Bachchans for their Hindu religiosity and charitable works but is extremely concerned about their actions, which will have an unhealthy impact on their fan base.

Before announcing their engagement, Abhishek and Aishwarya performed a series of poojas (offerings) at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. After their engagement, the couple also sought the blessings of the deity at the Vindhyavasini Temple.

The organisation opines that astrology and similar unscientific practices should be renounced in marital matchmaking and other everyday activities in Hindu society.

Aishwarya Rai's marriage with tree - PIL filed

Subscribe to Weird India Subscribe to Weird India in MY YAHOO! Subscribe to Weird India in MY GOOGLE! Subscribe to Weird India in MY MSN! Subscribe to Weird India in MY AOL! Subscribe to Weird India in Rojo!
Earlier news doing rounds about Aishwarya Rai was that, before tying the knot with Abhishek Bachchan , Aishwarya Rai may have to perform some complex ceremonies and rituals. According to an earlier tabloid report, as Aishwarya Rai is a 'Manglik', she may have to undergo a ‘Kumbh Vivah’ before marrying Abhishek Bachchan & may have to tie the knot two times to make her marriage successful. Two times, yes , she may have to marry a peepal or banana tree before her marriage with Abhishek. While this may sound weird but there may be some substance in such a weird ritual that Ash has to perform considering that the Bachchans are a very religious family.

Now there is another controversy about her marrying a peepal or banana tree before her marriage with Abhishek. As per a report A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Patna High Court against Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai for marrying trees to overcome astrological differences with her fiancé Abhishek Bachchan. Lawyer Shruti Singh, who filed the PIL , says the ritual promotes untouchability.

"I filed a PIL to stop such practices as reportedly conducted by actor Amitabh Bachchan for his future daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai. It is in violation of Article 17 of the Constitution, which prohibits untouchability. It also violates fundamental human rights," said Shruti.

According to Shruti, the fact that Aishwarya had to marry the trees and the idol before marrying Abhishek, who is a non-Manglik, amounts to untouchability.

"The rituals performed by Aishwarya, Amitabh and Abhishek would only promote superstitions and blind faith among common people," Shruti, who is also a women's rights activist.

Aishwarya Rai is a popular actress in Bollywood & Americans are waiting to see her in Hollywood films too! She has lots of fans in the USA too & she was also a former Miss World while Abhishek Bachchan is also an established Actor in Bollywood Film Industry & is the son of Great Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bachchan who too are an established name in Bollywood.
