Husband and wife told to live as brother and sister

CHANDIGARH: A village Panchayat near Rohtak in Haryana has instructed a married couple, who have a 10-month old child, to start staying as brother and sister as they are from the same Gotra or sub-caste.

After a six-hour discussion on Saturday at Kheri village in Jhajjar district, it was decided that even though the couple got married three years ago with their parents’ consent, they will have to, “end their marriage and start a relation of brother and sister,” as they are from sub-castes which are banned from marriage between them.
