Child marriage in a bitter divorce battle

AHMEDABAD: Here is an interesting story of a child marriage in which the girl after growing has refused to give sanctity to such marriage & is trying to have divorce from her husband who is a good five years younger to her! A bitter divorce battle in the family court is going on & now, as fall-out of this case, another marriage of her cousin has run into trouble because of the legal battle.

Akruti Choudhary was just nine years old when she was married off to four-year-old Vijay. The marriage was part of the 'sata-pata' custom prevalent in communities, particularly in north Gujarat.

Sata-pata is a barter system in which a girl from one family is married to the boy from another family which, in turn, gives its daughter in marriage to the first family. But Akruti, who has completed her graduation, has refused to accept her marriage to Vijay, who is studying in class 10 at present. The girl filed a divorce petition in the family court in July 2006.
