Man sells wife to finance drinking habit

A MAN in Kerala, South India, allegedly sold his wife for Rs6,000 (RM345) to finance his drinking habit.

Makkal Osai reported that Medula Rajender, 42, worked as a labourer.

When he was short of cash to buy liquor, he struck a deal with a broker to sell his 36-year-old wife Medula Ammayi last Saturday.

Ramajit Raghav and his 52-year-old wife, Shakuntala Devi, reportedly gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Ranjeet, on Oct. 5, according to the Times of India.

Jajpur (Odisha): Investigation into the sale of a baby boy by his mother in Odisha's Jajpur district has revealed curious details - the money was used to buy a mobile phone and a pair of jeans among other things.

"Rakhi Patra of Mundamala village who sold her 17 month-old son for Rs 5000 purchased a new mobile phone, a pair of jeans, few new tops (to go with jeans) and memory cards for her mobile with the money," Jajpur superintendent of police Deepak Kumar said today. A query under the RTI Act has revealed that many dead people continue to pay income tax in India.In Mumbai, a unit of the IT office received Rs 4.05 crore as tax from dead assessees in the past five years. In the same period, a Ranchi unit received Rs 27 lakh from seven deceased tax payers. The IT office in Allahabad has two dead taxpayers on its rolls.
