Chennai: Villagers around the Kudankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu are intensifying their protests following the loading of nuclear fuel in the plant. Around 1500 protesters have remained buried in neck deep sand at Idinthakarai since 10 am today. They will end their protest at 4 pm today.

GURGAON: A nine-year-old school boy was assaulted by a teacher whom he defeated in a game of chess. Police have lodged a complaint after a sports teacher allegedly twisted the nose of the Class V boy, Prince, which made him bleed profusely, and also slapped him twice when the child was adjusting his badge.

MOGA: In a country where superstition still prevails, greater democratization does not always seem to do good. A duly elected woman sarpanch (village leader) killed a teenage girl, who happened to be her niece, in an attempt to "rid her of evil spirits".

Pal Kaur, the sarpanch in Moga district of Punjab killed the girl by mercilessly beating her up with a pair of red hot 'chimta' (tongs). GAYA: College teachers of Gaya along with the sanitary staff have been assigned the job of 'cleaning toilets' during 'Pitrapaksha' 2012. According to a letter issued by the district panchayati raj officer, the housing in charge for the pilgrims, college principals have been directed to depute teachers on eight-hourly rotation basis for cleaning toilets during the pilgrimage season.

Chandigarh, A principal of a government school in Patiala was suspended Wednesday by the Punjab government after it came to light that he was drawing the salary of his teacher-wife, who has been in Canada for the past few months.

Gurjinder Singh Grewal was the principal of the Government Senior Secondary School, Bhadson, in Patiala district.

New Delhi, Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma Monday stoked a controversy with his comment that he was “happy” with price rise as it was beneficial for farmers. The opposition pounced on his remark, accusing the government of being insensitive to farmers’ plight and a part of the “mehengai mafia” (price rise mafia).

The minister made the remark while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function Sunday in Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. Mumbai: Cops have stumbled upon a gang that robbed temples, one of them posing as a pujari. Three of the gang members were arrested in Rajasthan on Monday for allegedly robbing cash and religious artefacts from a Jain temple in the city. The bogus pujari is on the run, and cops have launched a manhunt for him.
