Bhubaneswar: A tribal is living atop a tree in Orissa since Tuesday after he failed to pay his wife’s hospital fees, officials said Thursday.

Okil Munda, 26, a resident of Sansanadi village in Mayurbhanj district, admitted his pregnant wife in the government hospital at the district headquarter town of Baripada, some 270 km from here Monday. Indian police detained a Sri Lankan at Chennai airport after he attempted to smuggle 2,060 diamonds and other precious stones by carrying them in his stomach, the Times of India newspaper reported.

PATNA, India — An argument over sacrificing goats during a Hindu festival triggered a stampede that killed 10 people Sunday in a packed temple in northern India, officials said.

More than 40,000 people, many inebriated, had taken their goats to the Tildiha village temple in Bihar state to offer sacrifice and prayers to the goddess Durga on the last day of the Navratri festival.

Nearly 63 years after Independence, a village situated on a hillock near Indore, got its first ever electricity connection. Koparwel, a tiny village with 20 households, broke into jubilation with the lighting of a bulb in one of its huts this Friday. Ambaram is the first villager to get the electricity connection.
